Satellite Capability in Personal Emergency Response Services (PERS & MPERS)

Why Connectivity Is Non-Negotiable
In personal emergency response services (PERS) and mobile PERS (MPERS), connectivity is not a convenience; it can be a lifeline. Whether you’re a lone worker deep in the field, an older adult living in rural Australia, or someone managing a medical condition, the ability to reach help instantly is vital.
But Australia’s vast geography presents a significant challenge: mobile coverage is far from universal. Despite strong urban infrastructure, regional and remote communities face considerable coverage gaps. In fact, according to the ACCC, nearly 30% of Australians report mobile signal issues at home or on the road.
For people relying on emergency response systems, these black spots introduce unacceptable risk.
Why Satellite Changes Everything
Satellite connectivity is emerging as a critical solution, offering near-global coverage that is independent of towers, terrain, or local infrastructure. Until recently, satellite was costly and niche. However, with advances in consumer hardware, satellite is quickly shifting from a “nice to have” to a standard practice in modern emergency communication.
At INS LifeGuard, we’re proud to be at the forefront of this shift, blending mobile, satellite, and wearable technologies into a seamless safety network designed to keep users connected, wherever they are.
Multi-Channel Redundancy: The SmartHome LGX
Our devices are built on the principle of resilience through redundancy. The SmartHome LGX, our powerful in-home hub, supports cellular, Wi-Fi, and Ethernet connectivity, offering multiple failover layers to ensure support is always just a button away.
While not designed for satellite due to the need for clear sky access, the LGX can be paired with Starlink satellite internet, delivering reliable connectivity to homes previously off the grid. This is especially valuable for NDIS recipients or aged care users in regional and remote areas.
INS Mobile Devices with GPS and Satellite-Aware Support
Our mobile solutions, including the LifeGuard SmartTracker, SafetyWatch, and the INS LifeGuardian® app, all feature real-time GPS tracking and geofence alerts, supporting users with cognitive risks such as dementia and providing peace of mind for families and caregivers.
Among these, INS LifeGuardian® stands as our most advanced and adaptable solution.
- Initially developed for iOS, it is now also compatible with Android,
- Built-in failover intelligence detects mobile signal outages and prompts alternate communication methods.
- Integrated with Apple’s Emergency SOS via Satellite for device-level satellite messaging.
Satellite Integration: World-First Capabilities
When used on supported hardware, the INS LifeGuardian® app detects when no mobile network is available and guides the user to send an emergency SOS via satellite directly to Triple Zero (000).
This functionality is made possible by a tight integration with Apple’s Emergency SOS via Satellite, the result of over 18 months of collaboration between INS LifeGuard and Apple. The final result was publicly recognised by both Apple and Telstra as a world-first health and safety application of the technology.
Supported Devices (June 2025):
- Apple: iPhone 14, 15, and 16 series (fully supported)
- Samsung: Galaxy S24 (limited rollout)
- Google: Pixel 9 (in development)
When an emergency is triggered:
- The app attempts to contact our 24/7 Emergency Response Centre
- If unsuccessful, and hardware permits, the user is guided to send an SOS via satellite to 000
Next: Direct-to-Nurse Satellite Messaging with Telstra + Starlink
We are currently collaborating with Telstra and Starlink to support their satellite messaging platform, providing our users with the next level of service continuity.
This future capability will:
- Enable direct connection to our emergency nurses via satellite, without needing to route through 000
- Support two-way messaging, depending on the device
- Increase speed, continuity, and personalisation of care, especially in areas with no mobile signal
This innovation will redefine emergency support for rural Australia, lone workers, and those with mobility or medical risks.
Next-Gen Satellite SmartTracker (In Development)
In parallel, we are developing a next-generation LifeGuard SmartTracker. This new version will introduce a compact, wrist-wearable form factor and support satellite-based emergency alerts, ensuring reliable personal safety even in complete mobile dead zones. Pending Telstra’s commercial satellite SIM rollout, this new device will be made available to at-risk groups.
Key features:
- Satellite-based emergency alerts in mobile dead zones
- Sleek wrist-wearable design for round-the-clock use
- Pending Telstra SIM access and regulatory compliance
