Frequently Asked Questions
A comprehensive guide to the INS LifeGuard personal alarms and how they fit into Australia’s Assistive Technology and Home Modifications (AT-HM) Scheme, part of the Support at Home program under My Aged Care.
What makes INS LifeGuard different from other personal alarm providers?
Unlike most providers who use call centres, our Emergency Response Centre is staffed by registered nurses and experienced healthcare professionals — 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We don’t just dispatch help — we clinically assess, triage, and provide real-time medical advice.
Are these alarms only for emergencies?
No. Clients can press the button if they feel unwell, need reassurance, or simply want to speak with a nurse. Our team also provides welfare checks and ongoing health monitoring.
What if I live in a rural area or have poor mobile coverage?
We offer landline-based solutions like the LifeGuard L-401, perfect for homes without nbn™ or mobile reception. This system uses a standard telephone line (PSTN) and provides reliable communication via long-range transmitters.
Can these systems detect falls automatically?
Yes. Optional fall detection pendants are available for all our in-home alarm systems. These devices detect sudden impact and inactivity, sending an alert to our nurses even if you're unable to press the HELP button.
Do I need Wi-Fi or the internet?
No — not for all models. Some systems like the SmartLink Medi-Guardian MKII 4G connect over the mobile network, while others like the L-401 use your landline. If available, Wi-Fi can enhance connectivity in supported models like the SmartHome LGX Compact.
Can my family or carer be notified too?
Yes. With your consent, family members or carers can be notified during an alarm. They can also stay informed via the free INS LifeGuardian Connect® app, which sends alerts and updates in real time.
Are these systems compatible with other safety devices?
Absolutely. Our in-home systems can integrate with additional safety tools like smoke detectors, PIR motion sensors, gas/water sensors, wall-mounted call points, and even the Pivotell® automatic pill dispenser.
Is there any health support beyond emergencies?
Yes. Our clients have unlimited access to a 24/7 medical information and nurse chat line — perfect for health questions, general wellbeing advice, or when you're just not feeling right.
